On June 27 and 28, The 4th annual Northrise bike fundraiser commenced with a team of riders taking off from Pasadena, CA en route to San Diego. This year’s mission was to raise funds to supply Northrise University with bikes, replacement bike parts, and student scholarships.
The history of this fundraiser began in 2010, when Alex Plumb traveled to Northrise University and had the opportunity to work on the alongside the workers at Northrise Farms. As he engaged them in conversation, he discovered that there were some workers who walked 3 hours to work each day, and then another 3 hours home when their workday was done, because they couldn’t afford bus fare. As he asked around, he learned that this was also the case for some of the students of the university. Motivated to make a change, Alex came home and conceived of a plan to organize an annual bike ride to raise awareness and funds for the purchasing of bikes for the staff and students of Northrise University. To date, this fundraiser has raised upwards of $21,000 to supply transportation to those who need it most.
This year, the fundraiser brought in close to $7000. Special thanks to Alex Plumb for acting on a need and creatively and faithfully supporting Northrise, and to all who came out and completed this 2 day, 130 mile bike ride. Well done!
