BTh Program Overview

The Bachelor of Theology (BTH) is a four-year degree designed to provide an in-depth knowledge of the tools to exegete the Holy Scriptures with integrity. Through a biblically integrated curriculum, students will be equipped to assume positions of leadership, influence, and responsibility in church, community, schools and other organizations, both locally and globally. The BTH comprises of two tracks—Pastoral Studies (PST) and Biblical Studies (BST).

A Major in Biblical Studies is designed to develop the discipline of appreciating biblical languages that are the root to translating and interpreting Scripture. It also delves into selected books of the Bible to provide students a deeper understanding of the context and application of the scriptures in their lives.
A Major in Pastoral Studies is designed to prepare students to pastor and care for the body of Christ in their areas of ministry and to provide leadership of integrity in the community. This Major provides the discipline required to produce a sober leader who knows how to divide the Holy Scriptures for the purpose of nurturing God’s people and the community at large.

BTh Program Objectives

The program aims to equip students with knowledge and understanding of the following kinds:

1. The major types of writings in the Christian Bible (Old Testament and New Testament), contents , their basic literary characteristics, major figures and religious themes, current scholarly approaches and major accepted results of scholarly investigations
2. The history of Christianity from beginnings through to the current period, and with the spread and diversification of Christianity in various cultures world-wide (Europe, North America, Latin America, Asia, Africa);
3. The major traditional doctrines and issues in Christian theology, including key historic figures and the ideas with which they are associated, and acquaintance with critical reflection on Christian theology: issues, figures, developments;
4. Issues and approaches involved in critical discussion of Christian ethics;
5. The practice of Christian faith in various settings: church, society, and politics;
6. The encounter between Christianity and other major religions (Islam, Hinduism, and so on), with special reference to the current time, including key examples of Christian theological approaches to non-Christian religions;
7. Depending on the ‘Major’ and ‘Minor’ subjects chosen, advanced knowledge and understanding of selected subject areas or disciplines in theological studies (for example, New Testament, Old Testament, Christian Ethics, Practical Theology, and so on);
8. The development and promotion of confidence in the Bible as God’s inspired Word and authority for faith and practice;
9. Current trends and theological issues in Christianity today, with biblical answers to those trends and issues;
10. Values for the work of the ministry through developing an understanding and appreciation of various opportunities and challenges common to the Lord’s work with an emphasis on ministry in the local church;
11. Presenting of Biblical truth, a methodology for studying theology, and instruction in the use of appropriate tools for theological and ministry-related research;
12. Development within students the skills necessary for public and private communication of scriptural truth.

Program Minors

The Minor for both the BTH in Pastoral Studies and BTH in Biblical Studies is Education.

BTh Program Graduation Requirements

To be eligible for the award of the degree Bachelor of Theology (BTH) students must meet the following requirements as stipulated annually in handbook or other University documentation. 

1. Completion of the eight (8) Foundation courses in Theology.

2. Completion of the following twelve (12) Major courses for Pastoral Studies (PST) Major

   • The Minister’s Spirituality
   • The Pentateuch
   • Small Group Ministries
   • Church Administration
   • Pastoral Care in Loss
   • The Theology of Missions
   • Christian Ethics
   • The Theology of Leadership
3. Completion of the following twelve (12) Major courses for Biblical Studies (BST) Major
   • The Book of Hebrews
   • Spiritual Formation
   • African Church History
   • The Book of Psalms
   • The Pentateuch

   • Church Administration
   • Beginning Greek II
   • Greek III
   • Old Testament Theology
   • Christian Education

4. Completion of Research Methods
5. Completion of four (4) Minor courses
6. Completion of six (6) Bridging courses:
7. Completion of a Final Research Project
8. Completion of three (3) Christian Thought and Practice
9. Not less than seventy (70) percent Chapel Attendance
10. Attend an Introduction to University Studies Seminar
11. Attend an HIV/AIDS Seminar
12. Complete a Community Development Seminar
13. Complete a Career Development Seminar
14. Complete four (4) Service Learning participations
