Northrise Students - 2012
A Day in the Life

Northrise University has built a name for itself because of its reputation for academic excellence, the well-qualified faculty and staff, and the state-of-the art computer facilities. However, the school’s true strength comes from the students themselves. It is who they are, what they value, and what they want to accomplish that will create the hope Zambia needs to rise above the desperation their country faces.

Students like Erica Mulenga have devoted their lives to teaching less fortunate children how to use computers. Emil Mukaka founded and currently operates a children’s primary school in a local shantytown. Joyce Chimbila dedicates her free time to training HIV/AIDS patients and underprivileged women in occupational and life skills. The inspiration and hope Northrise students bring to the surrounding communities are truly building the Kingdom of God and providing their neighbors with the chance of a better tomorrow.

As the old saying goes “Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” At Northrise, we take it a step further: when education is coupled with spiritual growth, the results can be miraculous. Our students will not only feed their family and friends literally, but they will shepherd their community to grow in faith in God.

Typical Day

Despite their different backgrounds, students at NU easily integrate into the Northrise family and find a home away from home. A typical day for Northrise students lasts from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., five days a week. Besides attending class their day might include any of the following activities:

  • Attending Chapel
  • Participating in work study programs
  • Having lunch with other students and staff members
  • Choir practice
  • Football (soccer) practice
  • Studying in the library
  • Participating in group projects
  • Computer lab sessions

Sports

Northrise University Eagles Football team

Although the Northrise University Eagles are one of the newest teams in their league they have become a formidable force. Under Coach Tobias Nyirenda, the Eagles went 12 – 0 with 2 draws in 2007 ranking them as the number one team in the local amateur league. The team has some great players and a team captain that leads both on and off the field. They look forward to having a soccer field to play on as the campus is developed. The Northrise Eagles look to build a legacy for years to come.

Club Membership

Northrise University Information systems and Business Association (NUISBA)

At Northrise we encourage entrepreneurialism, and one of the first signs of that was the formation of an organization founded by the student body. In the spring of 2007, a team of four students assembled the Northrise University Information Systems and Business Association (NUISBA). This organization was founded and is maintained by students in the fields of information technology and business administration, however all Northrise students are invited to participate. Their motto is “Building High-Tech students with High-Touch standards.”

NUISBA seeks to bridge the gap between the university and surrounding businesses. NUISBA connects students with men and women already established in business, and provide essential knowledge for future graduates. The association tours companies and organizations of relevance to a member’s field of study and invites executives to give seminars or presentations on what to expect in the Zambian business world.
Since its inception, NUISBA has held several workshops including:

  • A presentation by Professor Mtambo of Northrise University on the usefulness and success of e-commerce in Zambias economy.
  • A forum on information technology associations around Zambia, and how graduating students could become involved in such organizations.
  • A workshop, offering practical interaction as well helpful information on the importance of networking

Student Ministry

Northrise Choir

The choir is made up of talented students who share a similar passion to express their love for God in the form of hymns and traditional Zambian Christian songs. Their primary function is to lead worship at the Monday morning chapel services; however they have performed at several churches in the surrounding Ndola area. Members of the choir typically rehearse on Saturday as a group and it is not uncommon for them to practice in smaller groups throughout the week or in the privacy of their own homes. The choir team is not only a great way for students to become involved in campus life, it also allows them to share their talents with others and praise God for the amazing opportunity to attend a university in their home country.

Alumni Life
